Why do you have customers sign up online?

I often have more instruments waiting to be serviced than I can get to in a reasonable amount of time. In the past I would start and stop taking in work but this was difficult to control. By having customers register online I can keep an accurate list of customers waiting to have work done and get to them in the order that they registered.

Can I just drop off my instrument at any time?

No.  Unfortunately I don’t have the space to keep an unlimited amount of instruments.  I try to take in instruments at a rate that will allow me to get the finished in a reasonable amount of time.  I will email you when I am ready to take in your instrument.

What is your turnaround time?

I have 3 categories for repairs:

Category 1: General maintenance – setups, pickup changes, electronic repairs, pickup winding, new nut or saddle, pickguards, fret leveling, etc.  These are relatively quick repairs that I aim to turnaround in about 1 week of taking them in.

Category 2: Moderate repairs – Refrets, neck resets, acoustic bridge repair/replacement, neck repairs without finish.  These are repairs that take more time.  I aim to turn around this type of repair in 2-3 weeks from the time I take them in.

Category 3: Time intensive repairs: Restorations, finish repair, neck repairs with finish repair. These are repairs that take a long time and I are difficult to calculate the  turnaround time.

Can I bring my instrument directly to your shop?

No. I have a small private shop that is not set up for customer traffic. I have a great relationship with the stores that I work through and they provide a valuable component of my services. They have regular hours, offer great advice, stock strings and parts necessary for repairs, and handle financial transactions. I am available by phone or email to answer questions and am always willing to meet you if necessary to discuss your instrument.

Are your prices the same at all of the locations you work through?

Yes. My prices are the same regardless of the store you choose.

Do you have expedited service?

No.  I have never been comfortable with charging extra for faster service while other people wait longer for their repairs.

What type of instruments do you work on?

I work on most fretted stringed instruments.

How does your waiting list work?

When you register online to have repairs done you are added to a list of customers waiting to have repairs done.  I have 3 categories of repairs based on the amount of time each repair takes. I take in a proportional amount of each category in an effort to keep up with each type of repair.  I take in repairs on each list on a  first come first serve basis.

I signed up for one of my instruments but I want to bring a different one.  Is that ok?

Sure.  As long as the instrument repair is in the same category of repairs.

Will you meet me to inspect my instrument?

Yes.  I am happy to meet you to discuss the work you need done.  That being said, if the work you need is something that can easily be coordinated via phone or email I would prefer that you drop off your instrument at the agreed location and I will pick it up according to my schedule.  I need to use my time as efficiently as possible to make a living.

Do you stock parts for instruments?

In general, No. The stores I work through have a good selection of parts and I encourage you to buy what you can from them.  If you know what you need I encourage you buy them yourself.  I am happy to order parts for you but this will add the cost and time for shipping to the repair.  I cannot spend time driving around town looking for a specific part unless you are willing to pay my hourly rate for time.  When ordering parts I will generally look for a good price where I can be sure I am getting a good quality part.  There are lots of inferior parts available at cheap prices but I do not like to take chances when ordering online.

Do you stock strings for my instrument?

In general, No.  The stores I work through have a good selection of strings and I encourage you to include a set when you drop off your instrument.  I stock bulk strings in various gauges in case a string breaks during repairs. If you use an unusual brand or gauge of strings please include them when dropping off your instrument. If necessary I will order strings for you but this will add the cost and time of shipping to your repair. I cannot afford to drive around town looking for a particular set of strings.
