Gibson EB-0 headstock repair

p8060001 This Gibson EB-0 Bass had seen some hard days. There was wood missing and an uneven crack repair.
p8060003 These earlier repairs were stable but not aligned well.
p8060009 I removed the mother of pearl inlays by heating them gently with a soldering iron to soften the glue and pried them out with the tip of an x-acto knife.
p8060010 Here are the pieces removed.  The Gibson logo came out in a few pieces.
p8070013 Here I have reassembled the logo on craft paper with hide glue.
p8070016 I flattened the edges if the missing chunk of wood and made a wedge that fit exactly.  Here it is being glued in with hide glue.
p8070018 Here it is glued and ready for shaping.
p8100019 Here I have removed the veneer overlay.  The original was a maple veneer painted black.  I decided to replace it with a dyed black costello veneer which has a fine texture like maple and is black all the way through.
p8100004 Before this photo I glued craft paper onto the veneer with hide glue for stabiltiy.  I also glued traced patterns from the inlays and cut them into the veneer before gluing the inlay to the headstock.
p8110006 Here it is glued and the cavities cleaned.
p8110008 I carefully removed the veneer over the truss rod pocket.
p8140010 I used black epoxy available from Stuart MacDonald to clue in the inlays.
p8140011 The inlays inserted in the cavities
p8140012 Inlays clamped.
p9110015 Here is the final headstock. The inlays were masked with cellophane tape and sprayed with black nitrocellulose lacquer.  Then several coats of clear nitro and buffed.  With a little leveling and stain the cracks in the back a barely noticeable.
